As a huge cricket fan, I’m always on the edge of my seat whenever I watch England take on their opponents in the Test series. But the latest news about Ben Stokes’ injury has left me - and many other fans - with a sinking feeling.
On August 12, 2024, England skipper Ben Stokes had to be helped off the field at Old Trafford during the Northern Superchargers’ match against Manchester Originals in The Hundred. It was clear that something was wrong, and the England captain was later pictured using crutches - a dreaded sight for any sports fan.

Stokes had been batting for the away side when he pulled up while sprinting for a quick single, clearly in discomfort. The Superchargers later confirmed that Stokes was being assessed for a hamstring problem, which could put his participation in England’s three-match Test series against Sri Lanka in serious doubt.
For those who may not know, Stokes has been dealing with a long-term left knee injury that required surgery in late 2023. He had just started bowling again for England, and this latest setback is a significant blow to the team.
According to Harry Brook, Stokes’ England teammate and captain of the Superchargers, the injury doesn’t look good. Brook told Sky Sports that Stokes would be getting a scan the next day, and they would have to wait and see how he is.
